Come for our panel discussion, moderated by attorney Amy Klosterman, which will feature four attorneys in the public service/nonprofit sector providing their insights on career paths in this sector.
Amy Klosterman, Moderator. Amy (she/her) is an attorney based out of Seattle, Washington, providing independent investigations to schools and workplaces as well as training and consulting on school and workplace legal issues. Amy also serves as an expert witness to both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation. Amy opened her law firm in 2019 to share her dedication for civil rights in schools and workplaces after serving as an attorney with the federal government. For 11 years, Amy was an attorney at the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR), where she investigated hundreds of school-based student and employee complaints in areas such as Title IX sexual harassment, Title IX athletics, Section 504/ADA accommodations, FAPE, retaliation against students and employees, website and physical facility accessibility, and race/national origin discrimination.
Bridget Casey, Panelist. Bridget Casey has served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for over twenty years. Bridget has worked in both the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the office. As a Criminal DPA, she prosecuted a wide range of cases in the District Court, Domestic Violence, Juvenile and Non-Violent Units. As a Civil DPA, Bridget handled all aspects of civil litigation and appeals in State and Federal courts. Bridget was the lead of the Litigation Unit for several years and now serves as the Civil Division Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. Bridget holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Government from the University of Notre Dame where she was a member of the varsity swimming program. She earned her JD cum laude from the Gonzaga University School of Law, which brought her back closer to home after spending time on the East Coast as an AmeriCorps volunteer. Bridget, her husband and two elementary-school aged children live in Snohomish County. She now spends her very limited free time on the fields and sidelines of youth sporting events.
Marsha Chien, Panelist. Marsha is a Deputy Solicitor General for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. There, she has worked on litigation challenging the Muslim travel ban, the repeal of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and the failure of prison detention centers to pay the minimum wage to detainee workers. Prior to joining the AG’s Office, Marsha was a Skadden Fellow and Staff Attorney for Legal Aid at Work in San Francisco, and clerked for the Honorable Marsha J. Pechman in the Western District of Washington. She lives with her husband, three daughters, a dog and a cat.
Michelle Luna, Panelist. Michelle is the Assistant Chief in the Civil Division of Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Currently she assists in the oversight of all risk management/litigation for Pierce County and has experience defending the government in a variety of subject matters including class actions, complex negligence, medical malpractice, employment, and injunctions in both State and Federal Court. She has briefed and argued over 125 cases at the appellate level – including before the Court of Appeals, Washington Supreme Court, and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She is a trained mediator and loves helping people find a resolution in simple and complex matters. She earned her B.A. from Gonzaga University and her J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law. She is the single mom of four children, ages 16-23. Her working mama career highlights includes arguing two cases before the Washington Supreme Court when she was eight-weeks postpartum with her fourth child and going into pre-labor during closing argument in a three strikes murder case with baby number two. She believes in seeking all forms of support in motherhood and law and chooses exercise as her primary coping mechanism.
Vanessa Torres Hernandez, Panelist. Vanessa is the Integrated Advocacy Director at the ACLU of Washington, where she leads efforts to develop and coordinate legal, policy, political, communications, and organizing strategies to protect and promote the civil rights and civil liberties of all Washingtonians. Vanessa formerly served as the Director of Advocacy at the Northwest Justice Project, the state’s largest provider of civil legal services to low-income people, and a staff attorney and policy director with the ACLU of Washington. Before joining the ACLU, Vanessa served as a law clerk for Judge Betty Binns Fletcher on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. She is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law, where she was a Gates Public Service Law Scholar. A native of Guam and proud Chamoru, Vanessa spends her free time with her two teenagers and husband; she enjoys reading, cooking and baking, cycling, scuba diving, and planning family vacations.
