Lunch Seminar & Q&A: Legal Issues and Emerging Trends Related to Dyslexia in Washington Schools
Join us for an informative lunch seminar exploring the legal landscape and current trends surrounding dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities in Washington schools. Presenters Lara Hruska and Elicia Johnson from Cedar Law will provide an overview of key state and federal laws, recent guidance, and how districts are responding to growing awareness and legal obligations around early identification, specialized instruction, and accommodations.
They’ll discuss:
- Recent legal developments impacting students with dyslexia.
- Trends in how Washington school districts are addressing screening, intervention, and services.
- Practical considerations for families, educators, and advocates navigating special education and Section 504 processes.
- Common challenges and emerging best practices.
Who should attend: Parents, caregivers, educators, advocates, and professionals working with students with learning differences.
Lara Hruska
Lara founded Cedar Law based on a holistic approach to school law informed by her unique background in education, social work, and the law. She is licensed to practice law in Washington, Oregon and California. Lara received her JD from the University of Washington School of Law and also holds an MSW in Child and Family Welfare Policy from Columbia University, an MSEd in Special and General Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education, and a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from U.C. Berkeley. She has experience teaching children from pre-kindergarten through middle school in California, New York, and Louisiana, where she served as the founding special education director for two post-Katrina charter schools in New Orleans.
Elicia Johnson
Elicia Johnson joined Cedar Law in 2019. Prior to that, she spent 20 years as a corporate attorney with a focus on employment matters. She came to Cedar Law seeking to transition her career to one that serves children, students, and educators and advances civil liberties. She graduated from Harvard Law School in 1999 and received her BA in Communication Studies from UCLA in 1994.
